truly american

Today, I posted a picture that pays homage to one of the two truly American movie genres: film noir. And, of course, the other is the western.

From Wikipedia: “Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood crime dramas, particularly those that emphasize moral ambiguity… Hollywood’s classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style… While many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression.”

This is one of my favorite movie genres. Anyway, this photo is done in that style: low-key lighting in black and white with an urban setting that is so typical of the noir genre.

Speaking of American movies, I expect everyone has seen Indiana Jones by now. I liked it. I’m not going to give away any spoilers in case you haven’t seen it, but some things seemed a bit far-fetched, and more so than a guy pulling some dude’s heart out while he’s still alive. If I were to liken this Indy movie to another I would have to say it’s most like Temple of Doom, in that it’s still Indy but it’s a little different than what we’re used to. But overall, I was happy with how it turned out and I had fun watching it.
