81 Car Troubles
Ali and I went to the race track on the fifth. Her boss Fraya was racing so we went to cheer her on. I was unprepared. For the hail of dirt, the rain… the rednecks. All in all though, it was very exhilarating. At the start of the race the announcer had everyone stand up and take off their hats for a prayer and the National Anthem. I was ecstatic. Finally some friggin’ patriotism in this country somewhere other than a baseball game. Very refreshing indeed.
Another amusing anecdote from the race; I was guarding the seats and my camera. Ali had gone to get us some refreshments. She came back carrying two hotdogs and a Mike’s Hard Lemonade (for her) in her hands and a beer cup in her teeth. We were in the middle of the bleachers so along the way everyone was evidently very impressed so they were whistling and catcalling. I felt proud. When he saw that she was coming to sit with me, the guy next to me says, “You got a good woman there.” I turned to him and said, “I know.” Ah, the race track is a good place to feel like a man.
